Amid growing Chinese aggression, Taiwan has decided to extend mandatory military service for male citizens from four months to one year starting in 2024, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen announced on Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

China sent 71 warplanes as a part of its biggest display of military might near Taiwan since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the democratically-run island in August, with Taipei accusing Beijing of "military intimidation."

Ministry of National Defence, Taiwan, claimed Monday that 47 planes from the Chinese air force crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line in the last 24 hours. Responding to the statement, China said it operated "strike drills" in the sea and airspace around Taiwan on Sunday. 

The Chinese military's Eastern Theater Command had on Sunday announced that it carried out joint combat readiness patrol and "strike drills" around Taiwan, according to CNN.
