Cyclone Jawad LIVE Updates: Heavy rainfall expected in coastal districts of Odisha

Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh breathed a sigh of relief as cyclonic storm Jawad weakened into a deep depression before reaching the east coast. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, it is likely to weaken further into a depression by the time it reaches Puri in Odisha around noon on Sunday. However, the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal districts remains. On Saturday, thousands of people living along the sea were evacuated as a precautionary measure and 64 teams of the National Disaster Response Force were kept ready to tackle any eventuality. One person lost his life when a tree came crashing down on him as a result of cyclone-affected weather in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district. A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm Jawad on Friday and is likely to make landfall near Puri in Odisha on Sunday, the IMD said. The areas which will be impacted the most include north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south coastal Odisha. Very heavy rainfall is expected in these areas and a red alert has been issued for some districts. The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura over the weekend.
