In spite of its steady growth, Nigeria’s broadband penetration still trails those of peer countries. According to data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the mobile broadband penetration rates for South Africa, Egypt and Kenya are roughly 116 per cent; 77 per cent, and 54 per cent respectively.
Indications emerged at the weekend that two of the licensed telecoms Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos) have returned their licences to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The planned nationwide broadband deployment is being threatened by the slow takeoff of the licenced Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos), despite a longer tenor and cheaper licence costs.
