According to a UNICEF study, comprehensive social security is a crucial tool for protecting children from poverty. "The proposed social security cuts by the current government will have serious consequences for childrens well-being," warns Sanna Koskinen, UNICEF Finlands special expert. Finland ranks only 14th out of 39 countries in UNICEFs Report Card study, which compares child poverty situations in EU and OECD countries.

Analysing child support policies among the group of developed economies, the report finds that despite an overall decrease in poverty of nearly 8% over the seven-year period, there were still more than 69 million children living in households earning less than 60% of the average national income

While some districts already offer such classes, the new law mandates it for those graduating starting in 2028.
