Stanley police officer killed during traffic stop | WSVA News Talk Radio

1 month ago in Local Photo: Saga Communications Virginia State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting in Page County. The incident happened shortly before 4 o’clock Friday afternoon.  Stanley Police Chief Ryan Dean reported that Officer Dominick “Nick” Winum was fatally shot while attempting a traffic stop. The 48-year-old Winum had been with the department since 2016. Winum had pulled over Dakota G. Richards, 29, of Stanley, in the 600 block of Judy Lane.  Richards got out of his vehicle before Winum could exit his police cruiser and shot Winum, who died at the scene. Virginia State Police say Richards ran away but was later found hiding in a barn. Richards reportedly made a “threatening movement” and was shot and killed by officers. It’s unclear what led up to the traffic stop. Winum had been with Stanley police since 2016. Before that, he was a Virginia state trooper

1 month ago in Local Photo: Saga Communications 2/27/21 A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family of Stanley police officer killed in the line of duty Friday afternoon. Money raised will go toward funeral and other expenses.  Dominic “Nick” Winum died at the scene after being shot by 29-year-old Dakota Richards during a traffic stop.  Virginia State Police say Richards shot Winum before the officer could get out of his patrol vehicle. Virginia State Police say Richards ran away but was later found hiding in a barn. Richards reportedly made a “threatening movement” and was shot and killed by officers. It’s unclear what led up to the traffic stop. Winum had been with Stanley police since 2016. Before that, he was a Virginia state trooper.
