First Black missionary to serve after 1978 revelation on priesthood explains why attempts at explaining ban do more harm than good

Marcus Martins was 19 years old in June 1978. He had no expectation of serving a mission because of the priesthood restriction that precluded him from doing so. But all of that changed on June 8th of that year when a friend in Utah called to tell the Martins family the amazing news that the Church had announced a revelation extending the priesthood to all worthy male members ages 12 and older, regardless of race or color. Just months later, Martins, who had been engaged to be married at the time of the revelation, entered the year-old Brazil Missionary Training Center and became the first Black missionary to serve after the announced revelation. 

MLK memorial speaker urges BYU students to listen to others experiences

The Daily Universe Daylin Amesimeku was the keynote speaker for the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial event. The event focused on understanding the experiences of others. (Elena Castro) BYU’s Multicultural Student Services and Black Student Union held a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial on Jan. 21 focused on “leaning in and listening.” The event was streamed on YouTube in lieu of an in-person Walk of Life ceremony. The keynote speaker was Daylin Amesimeku, BYU Black Alumni Society chair-elect. The memorial also celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day student essay contest winners. Kaila Douglass came in first, with Grace Soelberg coming in second.
