The Biden administration is set to hold its first-ever offshore wind auction in the Gulf of Mexico to fuel a green hydrogen supply chain, despite challenges such as slower wind speeds and lack of legal mandates for clean energy in the region.

Three tracts, each spanning about 100,000 acres, are up for grabs in the auction, which is set to unfold anonymously over successive rounds Tuesday. Companies that have registered as potential bidders include apparent affiliates of offshore oil heavyweights BP Plc, Equinor Asa, Repsol SA, Shell Plc and TotalEnergies SE.
