DESTIN Jim Bagby, who is well-known in the Destin area and local politics, won the city’s special election on Tuesday and will soon take a seat on the City Council.
Bagby received a little more than 50% of the vote (690 votes) to defeat challenger Bobby Wagner, who received almost 41% (557 votes), and third-place finisher John Green (123 votes), according to unofficial results from the Okaloosa County Supervisor of Elections Office.
More than 1,300 ballots, including mail-in ballots, were cast in the nonpartisan election, which had an 11.8% voter turnout.
Bagby will be sworn in to office on Aug. 2 and serve on the council until Nov. 21, 2022, which marks the end of the four-year term of former Councilman Skip Overdier.
Destin council will first seek temporary member
Destin’s city charter states that when a council seat is vacated a new member must be elected no sooner than 60 days and no longer than 90 days from the date it becomes empty, according to information from city spokeswoman Catherine Card.
At Monday’s council meeting, Johnson said the city can fill the vacant seat on a temporary basis before it is filled permanently.
After some discussion, the council agreed to advertise the open seat. On May 17, the council plans to hear brief presentations from interested candidates and then appoint, by majority vote, a temporary council member.
