Just when you probably thought Montreal was getting a break from harsh winter, the weather is taking a sharp turn back to the cold. Mild temperatures across Canada in December were just a teaser. January will show its true colours with a colder, more typical winter grip.

An image circulating on Facebook said a polar vortex is coming in January, but NWS shares that image is not exactly accurate.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid-50s throughout Western New York. That’s 20 degrees warmer than the average Christmas Day high temperature for Buffalo.

Current model guidance suggests the northern tier of the country will continue its snow drought through January, while the southern tier of the country gets soaked.

Eastern Canada is bracing for some of the coldest air of the season, as a wave of Arctic chill is set to plunge temperatures from Ontario to Nova Scotia this week, including Southern Quebec.
