Why Spanish grape variety mencia might be the next big thing in Australian red wine

Save Share Could the Spanish grape mencia be the Next Big Thing in red wine in Australia? McLaren Vale winemaker Alan Varney certainly thinks so. “I’m really excited by the variety,” says Varney. “It ticks a lot of boxes. I think it’s got a great future.” For the past couple of years, Varney has made only a few dozen bottles of mencia each vintage, using grapes he buys from nearby Oliver’s Taranga vineyard, the first grower to plant the variety in Australia back in 2011. But he’s so certain mencia has great potential that he recently organised a get-together of half-a-dozen winemakers now producing a red wine from it in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills.

How South Australia became one of the world s most exclusive wine touring destinations

How South Australia became one of the world s most exclusive wine touring destinations Combining a sense of place with innovative wines, the wine-growing regions of the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale are well worth a visit Wine tasting with a view at Shaw & Smith winery Credit: Shaw & Smith winery It was a sunny spring morning, with hints of mown grass and cherry blossom on the nose. Up on the summit of Mount Lofty, some 12 miles east of Adelaide in South Australia, I could almost hear the sap rising in the vineyards down below.  Before me, running north-south in a band of freshly greened-up, mist-snagged slopes and ridges, lay the Adelaide Hills, one of the New World’s most innovative wine-growing regions where elegant chardonnays and cooler-climate pinots are setting new standards in Australian wine. Before me, too, was a palate-tingling prospect – several days of tasting and eating through South Australia, the state which dominates the Australian wine industry.
