The Indian government has authorized the export of 99,150 metric tons of onions to Bangladesh, UAE, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka. This decision stems from lower estimated Kharif and Rabi crops in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, along with heightened international demand. The National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) will oversee onion exports, sourcing them from domestic producers through competitive e-platforms.

This decision stems from lower estimated Kharif and Rabi crops in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, along with heightened international demand. India exported onions worth $431.78 million in April-January FY24 with $187.5 million shipped to Bangladesh and $48.12 million to Sri Lanka. In December last year, the government prohibited the export of onions till March 31, 2024 but allowed their shipments based on permission granted by the central government to other countries on the request of other countries.

India imposed a ban on onion exports last December amid concerns over domestic production shortfall caused by irregular rainfall, pushing prices up. The ban is in place until the end of the ongoing financial year.

According to sources, the decision has been taken following a recommendation from the External Affairs Ministry and after several countries made a request for the supply of onion from India.

"The government has misled us on the lifting of the ban on export of onions. No such decision has been made. This government has only one goal, that is to safeguard traders and kill farmers," said party's state unit chief Jayant Patil.

India, the worlds second largest onion exporter, had banned shipments of the kitchen staple in December 2023 till March 2024 due to rising domestic prices and potential shortages. This led to a surge in onion prices in neighbouring countries.
