Women s box lacrosse doesn t get a lot of attention and doesn t have as many players taking part, but the Ontario Lacrosse Association has launched a program to try to help change that.
The Ontario Girls Box Lacrosse Ambassador Program is being spearheaded by OLA VP of minor lacrosse Tanya Thompson and OLA Girls Box Lacrosse Director Rob Howey, but the driving force is the Ambassadors, girls and women who play, ref and coach the game and are sharing their experiences to help bring others into the fold.
Thompson points out that it s easy for young lacrosse players in her Nepean area to look up to local players like her son Ty, who was selected in the NLL draft last year, or New York Riptide forward Jake Fox. But she says she s found that a lot of minor and intermediate players in the area didn t even know that there was an opportunity to keep playing the game at the senior level in the Ontario Women s Box Lacrosse League and the Arena Lacrosse League.
