Garrison Rippa hit a 27-yard field goal in overtime, and Jacksonville State capped off its first season in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a 34-31 victory
NCAA President Charlie Baker announced Tuesday that he wants the organization to create a new tier of Division I athletics where schools with the most resources can offer unlimited educational benefits, enter into name, image and likeness partnerships with athletes and directly pay them through a trust fund. In a letter sent to more than 350 Division I schools, Baker said the disparity in resources between the wealthiest schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision and other DI members — along with the hundreds of Division II and III schools — is creating “a new series of challenges.” “The challenges are competitive as well as financial and are complicated further by the intersection of name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes and the arrival of the Transfer Portal,” Baker wrote.
Abu Sama made his first start for Iowa State a memorable one. Sama's 276 yards rushing in the snow in a 42-35 win at Kansas State were the fourth-most in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season. His big night was highlighted by touchdown runs of 71, 77 and 60 yards.
Football Bowl Subdivision newcomers James Madison and Jacksonville State along with five-win Minnesota are bound for bowls because of a shortage of eligible teams. James Madison (11-1) and Jacksonville State (8-4) are still transitioning to full FBS status and would not be eligible if there were enough six-win teams. James Madison, after having two appeals of bowl eligibility rules rejected by the NCAA, had threatened legal action to be allowed to play in a bowl.
No. 22 Liberty is a win from the first perfect regular season in the program's six years at the Football Bowl Subdivision level and already set to host the Conference USA championship in its league debut. There is one thing beyond the control of the Flames (11-0, 7-0 C-USA), who just showed up in the College Football Playoff rankings for the first time at No. 25. The regular-season finale is Saturday at UTEP (3-8, 2-5), with Liberty trying to become the first Division I team from Virginia to win 12 games in a season.
Texas State outyarded the Red Wolves, had 36 more plays from scrimmage and held an eight-minute advantage in possession time — yet lost by 46 points Saturday to an opponent that entered the game ranked 92nd in scoring out of 130 Football Bowl Subdivision teams. ASU’s 77-31 victory made the Red Wolves the 15th FBS team since 2000 to score at least 75 points in a league game and the first in the Sun Belt Conference. The point total was the highest in a conference game since SMU outscored Houston 77-63 in the American Athletic Conference last year.
