The National Parks Service confirmed the reopening in a news release Thursday afternoon, saying temporary repairs to the road are sufficiently complete to safely reopen the road. A project to make permanent repairs will get underway later this year. Also on Friday morning, the Opal Beach day use loop D pavilions, restrooms and parking lot will reopen to visitors. Highway 399, also called J. Earle Bowden Way, will only open to passenger cars and emergency vehicles that are able to use the road. Commercial vehicles and oversized vehicles, including RVs, trailers of any kind, buses and delivery trucks will not be allowed to use the road until permanent repairs are in place.
