IBM upgrades its Big Iron OS for better cloud, security, and AI support

Thinkstock IBM continues to fine-tune its mainframe to keep it attractive to enterprise users interested in keeping the Big Iron in their cloud and AI-application development plans. The company released a new version of the mainframe operating system z/OS V2.5 that includes beefed-up support for containers, AI, and security. According to IBM, applications are at the heart of transactional and batch workloads running on z/OS. Fundamentally, developing new applications while modernizing existing applications is part of the digital transformation occurring in many enterprises. New features in the OS include Cloud Provisioning and Management for z/OS that lets customers provision a new z/OS system from scratch.

GitHub Container Registry available for production use GitHub Container Registry available for production use Part of GitHub Packages, the service for publishing and managing Docker and OCI container images will remain free for the time being. Credit: Dreamstime GitHub Container Registry, a new GitHub service for publishing and managing Docker images and OCI (Open Container Initiative) images within GitHub, is now generally available. The registry, which had been in a public beta period since last September, is part of GitHub Packages, GitHub’s service for publishing packages. With general availability, GitHub is consolidating its Docker registry into Container registry. Docker containers previously published to docker.pkg.github.com will automatically be migrated to the Container registry in coming weeks.
