Iowa City Police say a Cedar Rapids man ushered in the new year…and his birthday…by crashing his car into a downtown light pole.
The Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center received multiple reports of a Toyota Yaris crashing into a light pole at the corner of Clinton and Washington Streets, in front of Panchero’s, at 3:17am Friday. The pole fell on top of the vehicle, and witnesses say they observed the driver get out and walk away. The same witnesses pointed out the suspect, Zakaria Torgoni of Kirkwood Boulevard SW, to arriving officers before Torgoni could leave the scene.

A trail of blood and footprints in the snow led Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies to a suspect in a Saturday night assault in Swisher.
According to arrest records, 35-year-old Richard Corum of Roxbury Drive NW in Cedar Rapids had sent several text messages to a Swisher woman saying he was going to come to her residence and kill her husband. Corum then drove to the couple’s Division Street home and a fight ensued around 9:15pm, including Corum allegedly punching the husband approximately 15-20 times. The man suffered multiple cuts and bleeding to his head.
Arriving deputies found Corum’s GMC Sierra parked in the middle of the street at a stop sign at Division Street and Howard Avenue. Open containers of alcohol were located inside.

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A pair of Northeast Wisconsin men were arrested New Year’s Day on their fourth Operating While Intoxicated offenses each.
Wisconsin State Patrol say 45-year-old Scott Claussen, of Oshkosh, was spotted by a state trooper while his grey Jeep Wrangler was parked in traffic along Green Valley Rd. near Woodenshoe Rd just before 3 a.m.
The trooper conducted field sobriety tests and Claussen was only able to complete one.
Authorities say Claussen was arrested on his fourth Operating Under the Influence offense while he was under a .02 blood alcohol concentration restriction.
A state trooper also stopped a vehicle Friday evening on Highway 57 in Forest County in relation to an equipment violation.
