Jean-Philippe Dorval: Negotiating my Blackness an exhausting mental burden that every Black person carries

Kyle Strickland: We must have the courage to admit Columbus has a disturbing pattern of police violence

Note from Opinion Editor Amelia Robinson: Local attorney Kyle Strickland was invited to expand on thoughts he expressed in a Facebook post following the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ma Khia Bryant by a Columbus police officer. Strickland s comments, made before he was added to the city s civilian police review board, drew both criticism and praise.  “Do not let anyone tell you to ‘wait for all the facts’ while they simultaneously frame their own narrative of what occurred.” This is the opening line of my Facebook post in the wake of the Chauvin verdict and the police killing of Ma’Khia Bryant. I wrote about the power of racist narratives and police violence in America.

Scott Pullen: Democrats are pushing legislation that would slow drug creation

Note from Opinion Editor Amelia Robinson this guest column appeared in the Columbus Dispatch s print edition April 12.  Not bad, considering that last year at this time, experts warned it could take years for vaccines to become available. Instead, drug makers Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson brought their inoculations to market in less than one. This record-breaking rollout was no fluke. It was a direct result of billions of dollars of private-sector investment, coupled with U.S. policies that encourage drug invention. Thanks to our system, American biopharmaceutical firms currently have 4,500 medicines in development, including 260 vaccines, making the United States the global leader in medical innovation.

Portman: Fentanyl has become a significant problem in my home state of Ohio

Portman: Fentanyl has become a significant problem in my home state of Ohio Rob Portman Note from Opinion Editor Amelia Robinson: Senator Rob Portman, R-Ohio, wrote a guest column in Roll Call about his bipartisan Federal Initiative to Guarantee Health by Targeting (FIGHT) Fentanyl Act, which would permanently list fentanyl as a Schedule I controlled substance. Drug-related overdoses, especially those attributed to opioids, are surging during the coronavirus pandemic. With more than 500,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, policymakers are rightly focused on vaccines, therapies, testing and other public health measures. But we can’t ignore the growing drug epidemic and risk it spiraling even further out of control.
