The Finnish tech company owns over 6000 patent families declared essential to 5G connectivity in smartphones. Out of them, 30 patents covering a mix of cellular standards, connectivity, user interface and security, were the bone of contention in the licensing disputes. Nokia licenses these patents to smartphone brands on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

Oppo: Nokia and China's Oppo resolve disputes through cross-license deal

Nokia has signed a 5G patent cross-licensing agreement with Chinese device maker Oppo, resolving patent litigation between the two companies. The deal includes royalty payments from Oppo and catch-up payments to cover periods of non-payment. Nokia has been engaged in legal disputes with various Chinese tech firms over patent payments and recently reached an agreement with Chinese smartphone maker Honor.
