The bottom line is this: nobody really knows where the markets will be one year from now, or in six months, or even tomorrow.

The markets could use a breath of fresh air and a restart.  We are heading into a new year, but markets have little understanding of the calendar. 

Temperatures in the Midwest continue to fall. Markets are more difficult to predict.  What we do know is that volatility has been hot!

The title of this update mentions the international markets, but let’s actually begin with the US markets.

So, here is the question: will Santa bring market optimism, or will the Bear continue to heave lumps of coal?

Ten trading days have passed since the S&P 500’s wild +5% outlier rally day.  Surprisingly, the markets traded sideways through last Friday.

After dealing with the run-of-the-mill 2% and 3% outlier days, the S&P 500 popped off for +5.6% on Thursday. This was the largest up-day.

Statistically, there should only be 5 outlier days out of every 100 trading days, but a bearish market is known for volatility.

We will begin with the obvious, the markets have been volatile in 2022.  There have been several, short-term, fast fluctuations riddled with emotion.
