UK Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and his Shadow Defence Secretary John Healey ended the year with a trip to NATO’s Tapa base in Estonia.

Many protesters brought homemade placards condemning the war crimes carried out by the Netanyahu government, with the full backing of the United States, Britain and other imperialist powers.

The political challenge now being mounted against Labour must be thought through to the end.

Defending the Palestinians and defeating the criminal gang up between Israel, Britain and the US demands the mobilisation of the working class in Britain and internationally, against all the governments and political parties of the ruling class.

These events express a far wider opposition to Labour, which is seen as a single parliamentary party of war, alongside the Sunak government.

Where the Socialist Campaign Group’s John McDonnell has criticisms of the Labour Party, it is solely out of concern that its leadership is unnecessarily alienating workers and young people who might otherwise be lured into supporting the party.

Starmer’s speech was a declaration of authoritarianism, celebrating the party’s mass frame-up and ruthless purge of left-wing members. It was a speech that would be welcomed by dictators everywhere.

Neither Starmer’s “new regulatory approach” or Corbyn’s renationalisation under capitalism can solve the problems of a water industry that has been systematically looted.
