It’s official. The building on Fifth Street with the mural the Three Twenty Gallery is more than just a pretty picture.
This week, the artist known to most in Las Animas simply as STACE, hosted his first artist in residence at the Three Twenty Gallery: Brother Maars.
“We need something different” explained STACE. That’s what the gallery aims to bring something different to Las Animas. Brother Maars hopes to be that a unique artist who brings a different spin to art and to the city.
Brother Maars hails from New York and had always wanted an excuse to come to Colorado. He has done similar work on both coasts, but Colorado called to him as a great place to slow down and experience something new.

He also said that the graduation ceremony is now currently capped at 500 attendees with the decision on how to allocate those who may attend is pending. He also said that masks are still required.
Lotrich also informed the board on the progress of the BEST program grant and said that the internal review is finished. The final decision of the BEST Board will be made in May.

The East Otero School District R-1 hosted its monthly board of education meeting on Monday at the La Junta Intermediate School.
The Junior/Senior High School is looking at realigning graduation requirements to allow more flexibility. Superintendent Rick Lovato said a regular graduation is being planned and the local health agency will determine what needs to be enforced.
Lovato said there will be a prom this year, on April 24.
He also informed the board that CMAS testing has begun and that there were many who opted out and few who opted in to more testing. He said parents who opted their students out of testing will be asked to keep their students at home that day. If those students do arrive that day, they will probably have a study hall.
