It s emotional : Ottawa man with incurable cancer completes half-marathon

OTTAWA It s the moment Ottawa s Michael Baine met his goal. Just after 2 p.m. Sunday, the 72-year-old crossed the finish line for the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend’s virtual half-marathon. It’s emotional, said Baine, on a day that holds so much significance for him. That’s the one-year anniversary of when the bad part of this started, he said. May 16 is when Baine noticed something was wrong. I developed a very severe symptoms when I arrived home. I knew I was in trouble. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer, in 2020. He had hoped for a long period of remission, but it was not to be. The cancer returning.

A race with time: Ottawa man with incurable cancer diagnosis walks to support Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre

OTTAWA Michael Baine strolls along a tree-lined trail in Ottawa’s Hampton Park. Rays of mottled light dance on his face, illuminating a fierce determination in his eyes.   Baine strategically plants walking poles in the gravel path beneath.  They help propel Baine forward and keep him balanced. He jokes aloud about his tortoise like pace; the seasoned distance runner is typically accustomed to travelling farther and faster.  He’s completed more than 30 half and full marathons since the late 1970’s. It was hard. It was hard, but I loved it, said the 72-year-old. I was hooked. More recently, the former teacher and principal got hooked on high-altitude trekking.
