The OU School of Music will host an outdoor âSooner Bassoonerâ concert on April 27 in the Fine Arts Courtyard.Â
The concert will feature music by several acclaimed composers, including Georg Philipp Telemann, Bill Douglas, Julius Weissenborn and Johann Strauss, said OU bassoon professor Rodney Ackmann.Â
âIt s a pretty diverse program, from classical to original arrangements to movie music,â Ackmann said.
Twelve students make up the Sooner Bassooners, including 8 bassoon majors and 4 students studying other disciplines.Â
Ackmann said the majority of the rehearsals for the performance have taken place outside due to COVID-19 protocols. Thus, due to the weather conditions earlier in the semester, students have been preparing for just under two months.
The OU School of Music will hold a virtual concert featuring the Womenâs Chorus and the Menâs Glee Club April 17.Â
The concert, conducted by Associate Director of Choral Activities David Howard, will feature two pieces â âChichester Psalmsâ by Leonard Bernstein and âRejoice in the Lamb, Op. 30â by Benjamin Britten.Â
Howard said students are enjoying preparing each piece.Â
â[The pieces] are fun, and they re beautiful,â Howard said. âOne of the pieces is by Leonard Bernstein, who wrote Westside Story, so there s a lot of West Side Story flavor in that music. The other piece sets a poem by an 18th century poet who was brilliant, but also a little bit manic. The composers captured it very well, and it s very youthful and rhythmic.â
The OU School of Music will put on a musical tribute to the âfirst noted African American female composerâ Florence Price with a live stream tribute concert, April 9.
The tribute will feature instrumental and lyrical songs written by Price, a classical composer from the early 20th century who created orchestral pieces alongside vocal music. Undergraduate and graduate students will perform all of the pieces, according to a press release.Â
Before the tribute, music theory professor Sarah Ellis will present a lecture discussing Priceâs life and influences in her music.
â(Price) was very good at combining classical elements with African styles,â Ellis said. âShe was incredibly talented at bringing it all together.â
