Owensboro s Overflow Cafe 10 Years on a Community Mission

Owensboro is known for loving its community well.  The Overflow Cafe located inside Don Moore 54 is the epitome of Community Service and this week they celebrate 10 years. Angel here and I had the pleasure of hanging out at the Overflow with Susan the manager on Thursday to commemorate a big milestone.  Ten years of coffee, conversation, smoothies, smiles, food, and fellowship. If you have never had the opportunity to visit you re missing out.  Honestly, I love all they serve but I don t go in there for that.  I love the mission and the atmosphere.  It feels like home. Their mission is to give back.  Since they opened in 2011, they have given over $100,000 to local non-profits in our community specifically the homeless community.

Making Ends Meat grocery store fills void for Jacksonville food desert

He later had another outreach idea. Marcus woke up one morning and said, We need a grocery store, said Stephanie Burke, the nonprofit s executive director. It was that simple. So on Feb. 6 a nonprofit grocery called Making Ends Meat opened on Moncrief Road with a wide variety of fresh meat, produce and other items. It was an oasis in a food desert, which is a community with limited access to affordable, healthful food. The food comes from donations from the Feeding Northeast Florida food bank and purchases made by the alliance, which hired 10 people who live in the area to work there. Also supporting the store are area residents who pay $10 a year for shopping privileges. People who are registered in the alliance s other programs shop for free.
