Daily Noon Briefing Highlights – 17 December 2020 Fiji Tropical Cyclone Yasa made landfall today in Fiji on Vanua Levu island, with a population of nearly 136,000 people, and passed over many other smaller islands as a Category 5 storm. National authorities have declared a state of natural disaster and a nationwide curfew is in effect until tomorrow, 18 December. All major roads have been reportedly flooded in Vanua Levu, northern Viti Levu and other islands in the Northern region and a landslide was reported in Tailevu Province. Approximately 73,000 people are potentially exposed to widespread wind damage. The UN Resident Coordinator in Fiji has agreed to provide coordinated and systematic assistance in support of the Government as it takes the lead in the response and recovery.

Asia and the Pacific: Weekly Regional Humanitarian Snapshot (8 - 14 December 2020) Format FIJI Tropical Cyclone Yasa formed over open waters between Fiji and Vanuatu and has intensified into a Category 4 system (BOM/FMS Scale). It is expected to further intensify with a potential landfall over large parts of Fiji on Friday 18 December. The Pacific Humanitarian Team is currently upgrading preparedness procedures with humanitarian partners and is coordinating with Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO). INDONESIA Heavy rains on 13-14 December led to floods and landslides in Cilacap District in Central Java. This is the third time in two months that this area has been affected by flooding.

WHAT IS THE COUNTRY PREPAREDNESS PACKAGE? The Country Preparedness Package (CPP) is a joint initiative of the Government of Tuvalu and the Pacific Humanitarian Team (PHT). The CPP is intended to strengthen preparedness and collaboration between national and international actors in disaster response. The CPP is developed and agreed upon with the national government before a disaster. Through the process, national actors become more aware of international tools and services and how they can be activated. This will enable a more ‘country-driven’ response, tailored to the specific context.
