The Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government and the state election commission to rethink the amount of compensation for families of polling officers, who died due to COVID-19 during panchayat elections, and observed that the amount must at least be to the tune of Rs one crore.

LUCKNOW: Voting for the third phase of the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh is under way with more than 2.72 lakh candidates in the fray in over 2.14 lakh seats across 20 districts of the state.
According to the state election commission (SEC), nearly 10.27% polling has been recorded till 9am.
Polling is being held in Shamli, Meerut, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Kasganj, Firozabad, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Unnao, Amethi, Barabanki, Balrampur, Siddharthanagar, Deoria, Chandauli, Mirzapur and Ballia. Voting started at 7am on a peaceful note. It will continue till 6pm, a state election commission (SEC) official said.
