Mumbai Crime Branch filed a chargesheet against former police chief Param Bir Singh, suspended cop Sachin Vaze and two others.

The Mumbai Police on Saturday filed its chargesheet against suspended DGP-rank IAS officer and its former chief Param Bir Singh in an alleged case of extortion lodged by a city-based businessman.  The chargesheet was filed before the 37th Esplanade Magistrate Court.  This is the first chargesheet filed against Singh, a former Mumbai Commissioner of Police in Mumbai and Thane. 

The advocate representing Anil Deshmukh's son argued that if Param Bir Singh could get protection from arrest, then why not Hrishikesh Deshmukh.

Sources have said Param Bir Singh is likely to be suspended and the order for the same would be released today.

The decision by the state government to suspend Param Bir Singh, a 1988 batch IPS officer - who was declared a Proclaimed Offender by a Mumbai Court in November - follows a probe report submitted by Additional Chief Secretary Debashish Chakravarti.

The former Mumbai police chief is likely to face suspension under the Rule 3 of the All-India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969.

The Maharashtra government on Thursday suspended former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh and has initiated disciplinary proceedings in respect of certain irregularities and lapses committed by him including unauthorized absence from duty.

Mumbai's Esplanade court on Tuesday cancelled the non-bailable warrant against Param Bir Singh in the Marine Drive extortion case after he appeared before the court and filed an application for the same.
