PETALING JAYA: The Federal Territories Pardons Board’s decision to reduce former prime minister Najib Razak’s prison sentence and fine will not weaken the resolve of the government to combat corruption, a PKR MP said.

Former prime minister Najib Razak could be released from prison as early as August 2026, after his sentence for his role in the 1MDB corruption scandal was halved. Whatever the reasons for the decision, the political implications are vast, says ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute’s James Chai.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has the power to grant pardons, reprieves and respites in respect of all offences which have been tried by court-martial and all offences committed in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, while the Ruler or Governor of a state has similar power in respect of all offences committed in his state.
