Jamaica commemorates Zong Massacre today
Jamaica is commemorating the Zong Massacre today (December 22).
Culture Minister Olivia Grange will be joined by Member of Parliament Floyd Green, for a floral tribute at the Zong Monument in Black River, St. Elizabeth at 9 o clock.
On December 22 1781, the slave ship Zong docked in the Black River with half of the 440 Africans it took from Ghana for slavery, in St. Elizabeth.
The other Africans were thrown overboard by the ship’s captain.
A release from the Ministry explains that water shortage, illness and death on the ship along with poor navigational decisions resulted in confusion.
