Police: Impaired woman struck and killed husband with car in Elizabeth City

Police officers who shot Andrew Brown will keep their jobs, sheriff says

Police officers who shot Andrew Brown will keep their jobs, sheriff says Josh Marcus © Provided by The Independent The three sheriff’s deputies who opened fire and killed Andrew Brown, an unarmed Black man sitting in his car, will keep their jobs, a North Carolina sheriff announced on Tuesday, following news the same day that the officers will not face any charges for the fatal encounter. The deputies will, however, be disciplined and retrained, according to Virginia-based WAVY News, which first reported the news. “While the DA [district attorney] concluded that no criminal law was violated, this was a terrible and tragic outcome, and we could do better,” Pasquotank County sheriff Tommy S. Wooten, II, said in a video statement on Tuesday. “Every person in every job makes decisions. In law enforcement, we have a higher responsibility to do everything we can to make the best decision. We can always do better and we must.”

Relatives of Andrew Brown Jr. Dispute the Official Account of Police Shooting

More news continues to develop on the police shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr. An as-yet-to-be identified relative of the 42-year-old Black man offered a different account of what happened in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. After a judge ruled that the bodycam and dashboard cam footage would not be released to the public and the Brown family only seeing 20 seconds of the incident at the time the new account underscores the differences that have already emerged between the family and the Pasquotank District Attorney. The relative told CNN that Brown started backing up his car when deputies were trying to execute a warrant on April 21, and “they started shooting the front windshield of his car.” “He took off to go across the yard and they started shooting the back window of his car.” The relative also shared a photo to show the Pasquotank Sheriff Department’s truck in Brown’s driveway. It appears to show at least one bullet hole in the front windshield.
