New Hanover County is in a legal battle with the development team, Coswald and Tribute Companies. It’s over how a parcel of land in the northern part of the county is developed.
Each political season brings the question: What power does the county commission have when it comes to directing development? The answer is complicated, but at a recent agenda meeting on January 28th, 2021 Commissioner Jonathan Barfield addressed the new board members:
“The one thing I don’t want to see happen that the county gets sued. We’ve had several missteps in the past where we’ve got it wrong and developers had sued the county and won and built what they wanted to build.”

WILMINGTON On July 23, 2019, citing increased financial uncertainty and the level of funding needed to expand facilities and services amid the area’s rapid growth, officials announced plans to explore selling New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Barring any last-minute hurdles, on Monday, Feb. 1, 2020 18 months later and in the midst of the area’s worst health crisis in a century the county-owned health system will officially become Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. It will operate as a part of Novant’s Winston-Salem-based private nonprofit health network.
“There is no doubt that 2020 was a challenging year, not only in terms of the economy and finances, but in health and safety concerns as well. Obstacles are always present in planning for the future, but the fundamentals stay the same. Everyone needs to have a plan, commit to that plan, make adjustments when necessary and stay the course through good and bad markets. For most people, having a plan includes working with a financial adviser to set goals, evaluate risk tolerance and identify areas of special concern, and to serve as the calming voice when the going gets tough.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - We are learning new details about the basis for a State Bureau of Investigation case involving a local political group. WECT has obtained emails that indicate a New Hanover County District Court judge, who previously served as president of the Lower Cape Fear Republican Womenâs (LCFRW) group, was directly involved in the sale and auction of two hats that were allegedly marketed as being signed by President Donald Trump, when in fact, the presidentâs signature on those hats was digitally printed.
