CRANSTON, RI With vaccination rates on the rise and coronavirus cases on the decline, it s finally safe to resume in-person visitation at Rhode Island prisons, the state s Department of Corrections said Wednesday. While video visitation will still be offered, in-person visits will be offered again, starting April 14. The vaccination and safety protocols have led to a major reduction in COVID-19 cases, the department said, making Rhode Island facilities some of the safest in the country. This is a big change from December, when hundreds of inmates tested positive. Vaccination clinics started in Rhode Island s prisons just before the end of the year.

A winter storm is taking aim at Southern New England, expected to drop up to a foot of snow or more across the state Wednesday night into Thursday.
