A year after the murder of George Floyd that sparked nationwide protests, Black Lives Matter Lansing led a small gathering outside the Michigan Capitol Tuesday evening to pay him respects on the anniversary of his death.
Local activists, Black Lives Matter members and the organizers of the event spoke on the racial injustice faced by the Black community in the city of Lansing.

The at-large council member launched her campaign today from downtown Lansing.
Spitzley says some of her priorities include the economy and policing. “It’s a good time for someone who believes in fiscal responsibility, she says. It’s a good time for.a person who is ready to transform our public safety.”
If elected, Spitzley would become Lansing’s first female mayor and the city’s first African-American mayor. “I am a black woman. I’m a proud African-American female. I’m a proud mother and a proud grandmother, Spitzley states, but I’m also a proud Lansing resident. And so, I believe that I would be a great mayor.”

LANSING City Council member Patricia Spitzley officially kicked off her 2021 mayoral campaign Wednesday afternoon, with a promise to Lansing that she is ready to lead.
Spitzley has been an at-large representative in Lansing since 2016 and served as City Council s president in 2017.
The 56-year-old attorney is the director of government relations for RACER Trust, which redevelops properties General Motors formerly owned.
