The Hubble space telescope will operate with just one gyroscope going forward, which will limit its scientific capability, NASA announced.

NASAs Hubble Space Telescope is entering a new operational mode designed to bypass a pesky gyroscope glitch that has repeatedly halted its science work.

The Hubble Space Telescope will soon go into one-gyroscope mode, a move that will decrease the iconic observatorys productivity but give it margin for the future.

The venerable Hubble Space Telescope, which has revolutionized astronomical discovery since its launch in 1990, will ease into retirement with a scaled-back observing schedule, NASA officials said Tuesday.

Despite being down to two operational gyroscopes, Hubble is still expected to operate well into the 2030s, NASA said.

When a private space traveler said he wanted to take a SpaceX capsule on a mission to improve the aging Hubble telescope, NASA studied the options. Internal emails show concern about the risk.

A second consortium has plans to possibly boost the Hubble Space Telescope and extend its science mission, after SpaceX raised the idea in 2022.
