Schurr's lawyers have appealed orders sending the former officer to trial for the April 2022 fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya in Grand Rapids.

Family, friends and supporters of Patrick Lyoya— who was shot and killed by a former officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department— held a rally Thursday in his honor.

Thursday afternoon the family of Patrick Lyoya and attorney Ben Crump continued their call for justice outside of the Kent Co. Courthouse.

Grand Rapids has been dismissed from a lawsuit over the fatal police shooting of a Black motorist, but the case will continue against a former officer Christopher Schurr, who killed Patrick Lyoya in 2022.
