Dutch authorities discovered the new variant in samples dating back to November 19 and 23 – pre-dating the first identified cases in southern Africa.

South Africas leading virologist Tulio de Oliveira described the surge in infections as scary as he urged the public to get vaccinated and use face masks.

Dutch health authorities say the omicron variant was already in the Netherlands when South Africa alerted the WHO about it last week.
