A group of exasperated cyclists say they have taken matters into their own hands and put in planter boxes along one of Wellingtons main commuter thoroughfares to protect bike users. The installments are the latest in the saga for the capitals controversial cycleways, and could be shortlived as the city council says it will be removing them. Volunteers from Cycle Wellington built what it is calling a pop-up bike lane to protect cyclists on Adelaide Road. The group advocates for cyclists in the c...

Wellington.Scoop Within a few hours of a short popup cycleway being created this morning in Berhampore, the Wellington City Council said it would be removed. Its hard-to-believe reason: “because of safety concerns.” Then somewhat apologetically and unconvincingly, the council said “We understand the community’s desire for more bike lanes and other infrastructure in the city to make it safer and easier for more people to cycle.” To which a twitter reader named Pablo responded: Who sai...

Patrick Morgan, who was part of the group that installed the cycleway, said he had counted 60 cyclists using the pop-up lane on Monday. “We’re back in business. It’s for the same reason as yesterday, people on bikes deserve safety,” Morgan said. The deaths of two cyclists during the recent road safety week was a damning indictment of the safety of the country’s roads, he said. “It’s crazy. It’s become clear that the current system is broken and doesn’t deliver safe streets....

Joel MacManus05:00, Apr 30 2021 NZTA The Ngauranga-to-Petone shared pathway project will receive up to $190 million in funding from Waka Kotahi. (Video first published in September 2019). The $190 million Ngauranga (Ngā Ūranga) to Petone shared path will cost the equivalent of the entire country’s maximum annual cycling and walking budget, working out at $4.2 million for each 100 metres of cycleway. In a statement, Waka Kotahi said more than 700 cyclists currently made the trip between Ngauranga and Petone daily, and that number was expected to triple within the next decade. Patrick Morgan, of Cycling Action Network, said the estimate was a conservative one. “It will be an instant success. This is a reward for years and years of hard work by a lot of people,” he said. “It will be a transformational project, and we will wonder why we didn’t do it decades ago.” Morgan said t...
