Currently, Patrick Nicholas is behind bars. For his crimes, he is serving a 45-year sentence. He raped and murdered Sarah Yarborough in 1991.

Sarah Yarborough's killer Patrick Nicholas was found and convicted 30 years later using DNA evidence. He was sentenced to 46 years in prison.

Nov. 21—It took 28 years for police to solve the homicide of 16-year-old Sarah Yarborough, who was killed outside her Federal Way, Wash., high school in December 1991. Her assailant,

"One thing the detectives kept telling us was … eventually technology's gonna solve this case. … I trusted that, and they turned out that they were right," Sarah Yarborough's mother tells "48 Hours."

Had Patrick Nicholas served his full sentence of 10 years for a previous attempted rape of another woman he would not have been free to strangle 16-year-old Sarah Yarborough.

Patrick Nicholas was arrested and charged with murder of Sarah Yarborough in 2023 after DNA test
