State Health Department officials visited Community Hospital of Long Beach last week in what had been characterized as a "final inspection," but more issues have come up that likely will keep the hospital closed until after 2021 has arrived. "The inspectors found a number of items that need to be addressed/fixed," said John Molina, principal of the operator, Molina, Wu, Network, (MWN) via email. "Our current staff is knocking each item down. It’s like a ‘punch list that is done at ...

After frontline medical workers and residents of long-term care facilities receive vaccines, a consensus is emerging among health experts advising officials in California and nationally that teachers and other school staff be high on the priority list to be vaccinated next. Skyline series, Skylin3s. Harry Guerin: A sci-fi action movie with a virus threatening Earth and Dublin under quarantine - what are the odds that a lot of this story that you wrote would be so relevant to 2020? Liam ODonnell: Yeah, I really wish it was less topical, to be honest! When I wrote it in 2018 and then filmed it in 2019, we never really imagined that 2020 would play out this way - although I do wish we could have cured the pandemic with a 72-hour space mission to an alien planet. (CALMATTERS) – School reopenings will likely take center stage in 2021 as one of California’s biggest political battles. A special education pre-k class at Lu Sutton Elementary school in Novato on Oct. 27, 2020. Photo by Anne Wernikoff for CalMatters It’s a battle all the more noteworthy because it pits two groups that are often allies — unions and Democratic lawmakers — against each other. This week, the state’s two largest teachers unions — the California Teachers Association an...

Watching another squad’s special teams foibles really puts things into perspective. I felt a newfound appreciation for long-snapper Patrick Scales, punter/holder Patrick O’Donnell, and kicker Cairo Santos last night. That’s because I found myself watching Michael Badgley miss two important kicks on Thursday Night Football. Then I witnessed the Raiders’ long-snapper and holder have issues late in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s wildly entertaining Raiders-Chargers game. Again, perspec...
