Even as officials feed lettuce to manatees in the Indian River of Brevard County, the death rate there is worse than last year, which was set a record.

A family of three manatees have returned home and were rehabilitated at ZooTampa after a very dangerous year for Florida manatees.

The animal was found Wednesday afternoon and dies on Thursday morning before FWC rescue teams could arrive. More than 150 manatees have died in 2022.

Last year was the deadliest on record for manatees, many of whom starved to death because of a lack of seagrass. A die-off is happening again this year, and federal and state officials as well as volunteers in Florida are trying to save starving manatees with a pilot-feeding project this winter. But as Miles O'Brien reports, there are also larger environmental problems in the water.
