The many lawyers who have helped the former president avoid removal from office and indictment have drawn legal problems of their own.

The government tried repeatedly for more than a year and a half to get the former president to give back documents from his time in office. Finally, it resorted to a search of his property.

The archives reached out to lawyers for the former president less than four months after he left office last year seeking help in recovering missing material.

Government documents that President Donald J. Trump had accumulated were with him in roughly two dozen boxes in the White House residence. They were to go to the National Archives, but at least some ended up in Florida.
