British police have paid damages to two protesters who were arrested while attending a vigil for a woman murdered by a serving police officer. Thursday's announcement comes as the London force tries to rebuild trust after a series of incidents that exposed racism and sexism within its ranks. Patsy Stevenson and Dania Al-Obeid were detained at the March 2021 protest vigil in London, which police said violated pandemic lockdown rules in place at the time.

Sarah Everard, 33, went missing in Clapham, south London, on March 3, 2021. She was kidnapped, raped and killed by Met Police officer Wayne Couzens, who pled guilty to her murder.

A woman arrested at the Sarah Everard vigil has called for the abolition of the Metropolitan Police after she was awarded a payout by the force for its actions.

Two women who were arrested while attending a Sarah Everard vigil in London in 2021 have been paid damages and received an apology from the Metropolitan Police.

She tearfully told BBC Radio 4s Today programme, "I have never told this story properly."

The two women didn't realise they had met before police arrested them during a vigil until speaking to the BBC.
