Sullivan s Travels: Help determine future of South Natick dam
Wicked Local
For nearly 90 years, since the days of the Great Depression, the dam at South Natick has drawn visitors – animal and human – to its beauty.
It has been the inspiration for artists, a few moments of peace for bench-sitters, and even where the occasional fish becomes dinner for the occasional heron.
But the dam is aging. There’s the possibility the dam could fail, causing damage to property downriver.
According to information provided by the town, the current dam – there’s been a dam at this site since colonial times – provides no flood control. It’s there more for aesthetic and recreational purposes.
Sullivan s Travels: Honoring the town s quiet man, Pat Young
That’s Pat.
That’s Pat.
That’s Pat as well.
For more than four decades, Pat Young was the quiet man in the background, organizing events and making sure everything was in place.
Sadly, Young died on Feb. 14, less than a week before a veterans square would be dedicated to him and his family.
The ceremony took place on Feb. 20 at the corner of Vermont Avenue and Connecticut Street, in front of the place the Young family has called home for decades.
The square honored Francis Young, who served in the Army during WWII, and his two sons, Patrick and James, who served during Vietnam. Patrick served in the Coast Guard, while James served in the Navy.
Sullivan s Travels: Help clean up Natick s Coolidge Hill next weekend
Wicked Local
Pat Conaway and his “Keep Natick Beautiful” team will be cleaning up the top of Coolidge Hill on Dec. 12 from 9 a.m.-noon (postponed from Dec. 5 due to weather).
According to Conaway, the site’s been used for some heavy-duty partying over the past couple of months, and means lots of trash and broken glass.
If you can spare an hour or two, come on down the grassy triangle at the foot of the hill on Jefferson Street, or the shoulder near the sledding hill on School Street.
