The Baller Awards | The Cascade

Welcome to The Cascade’s first annual Baller Awards! UFV’s athletic awards are yet to be given out, yet we here at The Cascade jumped the gun and decided on what awards we’d be giving (and whom we’d give them to). Some are a little less than conventional, but they’re all stuffed with prestige and glory and fabulous prizes (that possibly don’t exist)! This year’s winners are … (drumroll) … Female athlete of the year: Kayla Bruce (Women’s Volleyball) Hands down Kayla Bruce. With no disrespect intended to any other female athletes at UFV, Bruce is the clear winner of this year’s highest athletic honour. PACWEST Player of the Year and CCAA player of the year, Bruce led her team to a national title after a near perfect season. Seriously, this girl has raised the bar for what is expected from athletes at UFV.

Water wars | The Cascade

Print Edition: November 23, 2011 “Na na na na na na na na  BANMAN! BANMAN!” Thus sang my wonderful mother late Sunday evening, heralding the arrival of Abbotsford’s new mayor—and chiropractor-in-chief —Bruce Banman. As she pointed out, Banman even has the charismatic playboy/vigilante’s first name, although not, admittedly, the caped crusader’s famous physique. I’d like to think that Banman got elected for holding some of the same values as Batman, things like a commitment to justice and a penchant for kicking ass, but I suspect otherwise. From a cynical perspective, Banman’s success is likely the result of former mayor George Peary’s failure – failure to shake the role of super-villain in the fiasco that was the Stave Lake Project.

A Joyful Reunion?: Student journalists on lockout politics

How have you been covering the lockout? I’ve been trying not to go every issue, but whenever there’s a big development.  When it started I published a big story about it, midway through just to give an update, and now, next issue I’m actually publishing an article about the end of the lockout. How does your region feel about the lockout? Bishop’s being a very anglophone school and a lot of people from out of province, people miss the rivalry of the bar, that’s the big thing. The big student bar is The Lion, which is a three-minute walk from campus. Whenever there’s a Leafs and Canadiens game that is the place to be. All the Ontario kids got in their corner, all the Quebec kids got in their’s and they just fight it out in the bar . . . that’s something that was really missed.

Quantum of knowledge: Skeptics Café

Print Edition: March 20, 2013 Is there a meaning to life, and is it the same for everyone? This was the question students and presenters attempted to answer last Wednesday at UFV’s first Skeptics Café. The discussion ranged from Nietzsche to Egyptian hieroglyphics as the 20 or so attendees bandied logical and philosophical structures like hot potatoes amongst the tables of UFV’s AfterMath campus pub. The event was sponsored by University Christian Ministries (UCM) and was led by Andy Steiger and Greg Harris, both staff at Abbotsford’s Northview Community Church. Steiger, who is also founder and director of Apologetics Canada, opened with the premise that meaning is necessary to living, and that such meaning must be “objective” rather than “subjective.”
