Architect Andrea Matthews, a member of the Portlandia Toastmasters Club, knows stage fright. The first time she gave a speech without notes, “it was kind of scary,” she says. “But I did it and everyone still laughed. They still smiled. They still clapped. I felt like a million bucks.”
Matthews isn’t alone in her desire to be more relaxed and effective when talking to others. People who join groups like Toastmasters to improve their presentations are salespeople, educators, pastors and comedians.
