1958年退役归家之时他拒绝优待，回乡之后默默奉献，深藏功名数十年，做过会计、采购员、保管员。后经介绍前往煤矿工作，因家庭负担重，主动申请下井工作，最终在普通煤矿工人岗位上退休。甘厚美的孩子们从小只知道父亲是退役老兵。几十年来，他们从未听父亲提起曾经立下的战功。
甘厚美说，他这辈子最值得骄傲的三件事分别是：成为了一名光荣的共产党员；没占过公家一分便宜，没犯过让人指手画脚的错误；自己的孩子凭着努力成为了对社会有用的人。
