Notice regarding Maynard Nichols

Provost Peggy Agouris sent the following message to the campus community June 1, 2021. - Ed. Dear Colleagues, I write to share the news that Professor of Marine Science, Emeritus Maynard M. Nichols, 93, passed away peacefully on May 12 with his wife, Jane, by his side. He was born in Patchogue, NY on January 13, 1928 to Francis Nancy Nichols and Maynard Asa Nichols. Nick, as he was fondly referred to by family and friends, had a life-long love of the environment, especially rivers and oceans. This love guided him through his educational career earning him a B.S. from Columbia University, a M.S. from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and a Ph.D. from UCLA.

Notice regarding Robert Bob Ransom Jr

by Provost Peggy Agouris |  May 25, 2021 Provost Peggy Agouris sent the following message to the campus community on May 24, 2021. - Ed. Dear Colleagues, Robert “Bob” Ransom Jr., a former Air Force band soloist, local bandleader, and Instructor of Jazz Trumpet at William & Mary, died on April 28 th.  He was born in Warrenton, NC, the eldest son of Robert Ransom, Sr. and Esther Ransom.  He graduated from John R. Hawkins High School in 1951, and attended Howard University, majoring in Music.  At Howard, he met and married Ruth Ransom on April 21,1954. In the same year, Bob joined the Air Force and spent the next 20 years playing with different groups across North, Central, and South America.  The last 10 years of his military career were at Langley Air Force Base, where he was a featured soloist with the Tactical Air Command Band.  He retired from the military in 1975 as a Senior Master Sergeant.
