After some argument, the commission voted five to two – with commissioners Ivar Skavdal and Thomas Mulder dissenting – to limit the number of parcels a business or individual can have with short-term rental permits to three. To the majority of the board, the limits allowed for greater diversification of the cashflow from short-term rentals, rather than enriching a select few owners who purchase properties en masse.
The Humboldt County Planning Commission extended discussions on the short term rental ordinance Thursday night after an over three hour meeting on the subject. Commissioners continued going through alternatives and made progress on details of an ordinance that aims to create a permit for operators of short term rentals like AirBNB and VRBO for the first time in Humboldt County.
