A day of protest over pensions reforms saw tear gas and water cannons used by police at May Day marches in a number of French cities. The interior ministry said 291 people were arrested and 108 police officers injured in the disturbances.

Several hundred thousand people marched Monday morning throughout France for a May 1st Day that was both "festive" and "combative", the inter-union intending to show that it is not giving up its fight against French President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform.
