government buildings here, demanding that the region break away from ukraine and form what they re calling the people s republic of donetsk. the man who leads that movement, his name was at the bottom of the document, but we ve spoken to him, and he denies any involvement whatsoever, knows nothing of it, says it is some sort of what he says is a provocation. and that is very much the mood among the jewish community here, too. they think that someone could be trying to sew fear, perhaps create a pretext for violence, but more than that, they believe that their community is being used as part of a bigger plan, the wider, ongoing political game between people here who want ukraine to remain one whole nation and those particularly here in the east who are looking to break away, form independent states, or possibly join the russian federation. but it means that someone is trying to inject the ugly idea of anti-semitism into this ongoing crisis in this country, john. political games and a

the self-declared chairman of the self-declared people s republic of donetsk, the break-away protester-led group, they say they want a referendum as quickly as may 11th. sharp timetable there. the question to ask people, what country effectively do you want donetsk to be part of. a lot moving quickly here. the violence on the ground, the sense that the ukrainian army isn t able to assert its author here. we ve seen that armor move in, seen it taken off by pro-russian militants. some of the need to sur wren dring their weapons, take the fire pins out and give them to the pro-russian protesters. it s moving quickly here and it s moving moment tum certainly with the pro-russian protesters. nick paton walsh live from the ukraine. still to come, ever wonder what it s like to dip below the ocean surface in a submarine? cnn s martin savidge is doing
coming up later in the hour. this morning the pictures tell a story of the worsening crisis in ukraine as secretary of state john kerry heads to geneva to talk to among others the russian foreign minister the. ukraine is trying to fight back against what they see as pro-russian forces. you can see the tanks and the specialized ukrainian forces who are taking back a small airfield, and here, you can see the ukrainian vehicles with the russian flags and switching sides to the pro-russian controlled areas. jim maceda joining me in slovyansk, ukraine. what are you hearing? well, we are just leaving slovyansk, and one of the towns of ukraine and now it is the people s republic of donetsk, and now those people are occupied by the insurgents for
the forensic inspection of that site, of that scene? do you hear anything about any progress or is the scene indeed polluted? it is polluted and it s challenging because it s in a war zone and spread out over essential scare miles. but several world leaders have expressed outrage at the slow pace and pointing the finger at russia. t the netherlands prime minister saying that vladimir putin has one more chance to get things right here. describe the roadblocks. who operates the checkpoints. it feels even though you are in ukraine that you re going from one country to another. this is the people s republic of donetsk where i m standing. you need a different accreditation to do work on the ground here. the ukrainian side checkpoints are organized and civils but
